Why should I work with horses at summer camp?

If you love horses, and have experience riding or caring for them, this is the perfect summer job abroad for you. Through your own experience with horses, you likely know what it's like to see someone progress from the nervousness of approaching such a large animal and develop confidence and connection with a horse. This position is in high demand, as camp directors are always on the lookout for experienced equestrians.

What does a horse instructor do at summer camp?

Horse riding activities vary from camp to camp. You'll be spending your days instructing campers of various skill levels, caring for horses, managing the stables, and taking campers out on treks. The majority of camps teach English riding, there are also some camps who incorporate a Western style. You’ll be teaching several sessions a day, likely an hour long, where you will be responsible for small groups of campers. Camp directors are looking for confident horse riders who are keen to get involved and to improve the riding skills of campers of all age and ability levels.

Do I still get days off?

Of course! Everyone needs time to recharge their batteries after an exciting but hectic week at camp, as well as the opportunity to explore the local area and further afield. Most camps will give you a 24 hour block of free time every week, whilst some others provide 2-4 days off in a row every few weeks.

Do I need to bring equipment?

Some camps will want you to bring equipment for certain activities, but this will likely only be in the form of clothes and personal gear, but they’ll let you know this once you’re hired. Most often, you won’t have to bring any specialist equipment, with Canadian summer camps being equipped with state of the art facilities to develop the campers’ skills, as well as yours.

How many children should I expect to teach?

Campers come down to sessions in divisions (age groups). These can vary in skill level, but usually are made up of 10-30 campers. You’ll then be paired with an individual camper or a group, and don’t worry - you’ll be supported by your fellow specialists and counsellors.
