Why should I be a ropes course instructor at summer camp?

Reach new heights this summer working on the ropes course at camp. Imagine having the natural beauty of the Canadian wilderness as your office - where better to be out on the ropes? Ropes courses differ by camp, with some having purpose-built courses, and others building theirs onto the existing trees and natural scenery. You’ll see your campers grow from being afraid to even step onto the low ropes course, to rushing straight onto the highest ropes as soon as there! It’s the most rewarding feeling to know how much you helped your campers grow, not just as climbers but also as people. Don’t forget - you’ll also have the opportunity to develop your own ropes skills.

What does a ropes instructor do at summer camp?

Your main job is showing the campers how to move across the ropes courses, providing them with the encouragement to step out of their comfort zone. As one of the most exhilarating activities at camp, campers are always excited to be on the ropes courses, and the pride you feel when they conquer their fears is priceless. Most importantly, you need to be responsible - safety is everything when it comes to the ropes. Ropes course instructors should stay alert, always anticipating the needs of their campers.

Will I be trained?

When you arrive at camp, you will spend around a week getting trained in your activity, to make sure you give the best experience to campers, whilst at the same time ensuring their safety. Don’t worry if you don’t have any relevant qualifications, all we’re asking for is that you’re willing to get stuck in!

Why should I be an activity specialist instead of a general counsellor?

Most importantly, being an activity specialist gives you the opportunity to develop your skills in an area that you are passionate about, getting experience that’s not available anywhere else. Whilst you’ll be teaching your activity 5 or 6 periods a day, you’ll generally have more time off, with many specialists staying overnight with other specialists rather than campers. You’ll also get to know the whole camp, spending your days seeing different groups of campers into the activity and seeing them grow both in the skill and as people.

How many children should I expect to teach?

Campers come down to sessions in divisions (age groups). These can vary in skill level, but usually are made up of 10-30 campers. You’ll then be paired with an individual camper or a group, and don’t worry - you’ll be supported by your fellow specialists and counsellors.
