Summer Camp

My Camp Canada Experience Working at Summer Camp With a Disability

At Camp Canada, we actively welcome and support staff from all backgrounds, including those with disabilities, to ensure that every person has the opportunity to make a lasting impact at summer camp. We spoke to our Alumni Eddie about his experience working at summer camp as a wheelchair user.

Growing up I’d always dreamt of working at a summer camp, I grew up scouting and in the outdoors. I spent a summer in 2021 working at a scout camp here in the UK and really enjoyed my time, but as a wheelchair user I had no idea whether a camp abroad would employ someone like me. In 2023, I had an acquaintance work at a camp in America and it really showed me it could be done. After some research and seeing Camp Canada's commitment to equality and the package they offered with support around obtaining the work permit and insurance I decided to bite the bullet and apply - This decision truly changed my life for the better.

In the beginning it wasn’t always plain sailing. I was worried if I was honest about my disability I would be past over by employers, and not all camps I was but on review with were suitable for my own needs. Eventually I was put on review with a summer camp in Ontario and I remember thinking after my interview “this place is so perfect I really hope I get to go to camp here”. When I found out I got the job I was thrilled.

Leading up to arriving at camp they were fantastic at helping organising accessible transport to camp. When I arrived I was so pleased to find I wasn’t the first member of staff with a disability, that summer alone there were half a dozen staff members I was aware of with disabilities, many like me who used mobility equipment. The management were patient and understanding with allowing me to demonstrate my own abilities such as during the swim test, performing camper care and demonstrating safety in the lake.

The whole summer I didn’t just feel welcome, I felt like I truly belong and like my contributions to camp life were valued. I have made lifelong friends and plan to return to another camp this summer, in a different part of the country allowing me to experience more of Canada. I’m so glad I didn’t listen to my doubts because my summer at camp has truly been the best summer of my life… everyone belongs at camp. I cannot thank Camp Canada enough for supporting me in this experience. Don't ever let expectations hold you back!
