Why should I teach riflery at summer camp?

If you know how to use a firearm, and think you can educate campers how to safely and responsibly use one too, this might be your ideal summer camp role. From BB guns to air rifles, you will develop your skills as a marksman, and be able to pass this knowledge onto your campers. It’s an amazing feeling seeing your campers go from never having held a gun before to becoming expert shooters, all thanks to your instruction.

what does a riflery instructor do at summer camp?

At first, you will be teaching campers how to safely handle and use a gun at the camp’s shooting range. Campers will come to you with various skill levels, from no experience at all to seasoned shooters, and so it’s important you are able to adapt lesson plans to suit campers’ needs. As well as this, you’ll come up with fun games and activities to get campers enthusiastic about riflery. One of the most exciting parts of many camps’ riflery programmes is the tournaments held near the end of camp. You’ll help campers show off their skills, either with other campers or with other nearby camps.

Do I still get days off?

Of course! Everyone needs time to recharge their batteries after an exciting but hectic week at camp, as well as the opportunity to explore the local area and further afield. Most camps will give you a 24 hour block of free time every week, whilst some others provide 2-4 days off in a row every few weeks.

Do I need to bring equipment?

Some camps will want you to bring equipment for certain activities, but this will likely only be in the form of clothes and personal gear, but they’ll let you know this once you’re hired. Most often, you won’t have to bring any specialist equipment, with Canadian summer camps being equipped with state of the art facilities to develop the campers’ skills, as well as yours.

How many children should I expect to teach?

Campers come down to sessions in divisions (age groups). These can vary in skill level, but usually are made up of 10-30 campers. You’ll then be paired with an individual camper or a group, and don’t worry - you’ll be supported by your fellow specialists and counsellors.
